A Greener Outlook Landscapes

Scarification

Scarification is the mechanical method of removing of thatch in both its surface and sub-surface forms.  A mechanical process which powers a tine/blade through the grass lifting decaying matter.  Its this matter which delays nutrients entering the soil and reduces the light and oxygen around the base of the grass.

A vigorous process which we primarily carry out during the autumn period.  This give time for new regrowth into the spring.

Aeration

Grass rquires aeration for two main reasons.

a. Improve the drainage of the soil

Some soils need to be aerated to allow better drainage. On very clay based soils you may even require the surface to be top dressed. Which in its basic form is a sand based mixture which will improve the drainage qualities of the soil.

b. Reduce the compaction of the soil

Compacted soil occurs on regular pathways, kids footabll areas etc. This compaction is restraining the grass growth. The soil needs lifting slightly and grass/soil cores removed to allow oxygen into the root base of the plant. The roots then have room to grow and strength.

Poor drainage on a compacted surface will also promote moss growth. So improving drainage and relieving compaction are vital for a lawns growth.
